Tennessee State University has announced that it will offer men’s ice hockey beginning with the 2024 season, becoming the first historically black college or university (HBCU) to offer the sport at the collegiate level.
"Bringing ice hockey to Tennessee State University is a part of our continued commitment to provide our students with new opportunities and to broaden new interests in areas where they have traditionally had limited or no access," TSU President Glenda Glover commented.
The team will begin as a club program, with the university targeting eventual participation in the NCAA at the Division I level for both men’s and women’s teams.
Speaking alongside the announcement, Dr. Mikki Allen, TSU Director of Athletics, declared "Today is a historic day as Tennessee State University, a prestigious HBCU, collaborates with the National Hockey League (NHL, NHLPA) and the Nashville Predators in an unprecedented partnership.”
